A Book Can Change The Way You See The World.
We all live in the same world, but we see it through different filters. Life is enriched when we come alongside others and genuinely attempt to see life from their perspective. A book gives us the opportunity to experience life through another lens.
You cannot open a book without learning something.
Sensing the world differently
I love to travel and meet with people of different cultures, especially those which are significantly different to our own, but we cannot always travel to the places and situations that we encounter in a novel, especially as we don’t have the ability to travel through time, but through the eyes of the writer we can let our senses touch, see, smell, taste and hear a world of which we know little. It can soften us where we have hardened our heart.
Franz Kafka said:
A book should serve as the ax for the frozen sea within us.
When I was growing up I hated the fact that we moved around. I wanted to feel secure, keep hold of friends, live within my comfort zone, and I envied those who grew up in one place and knew everyone.
Now that I am older I appreciate what I learned from the different areas in which we lived. I have lived in some rich areas and some very poor areas, and the politics, religious persuasion, attitudes to money, education and many other things are quite different.
A book to spark the imagination
Through books we can learn to appreciate the views and perspectives of others, or be transported into a fantasy world that we could never have imagined on our own. I love the books of Brandon Sanderson and am continually amazed at how he can create worlds in his imagination. It sparks imagination in me. Novels can bring history to life when mere facts leave us cold.

The stories we are told shape the way we see the world, which shapes the way we experience the world.
An opportunity to change your view
There is so much information in our world; so many opportunities to learn. I believe that everyone that I meet has something that they can teach me. Everything I read is a chance to change my views on something.
In the words of Jacob Nordless:-
Blessed are the weird people – poets, misfits, writers, mystics, painters, troubadours – for they teach us to see the world through different eyes.
